The only other thing I’ll say is there’s a spot near the end where, as I was reading it aloud, I cried. That’s how attached I had become to these characters. And that’s a testament to the quality of this book, and the series as a whole. Empire’s End is Star Wars as it should be.

Perhaps the biggest compliment Star Wars Aftermath: Empire's End can receive is that the novel enriches the Star Wars story in a way that makes me want to go back and immediately re-watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to see if I can pick up on character details that will suddenly make a little more sense (two of the younger characters are shared here).

By the conclusion of Empire’s End, I felt I understood why the First Order was a more sinister and unhinged version of the Empire. I kept recalling a moment in the Marvel Poe Dameron comic, where Captain Phasma resents the First Order being compared to the Empire. The ones who come after the Empire are taught by those who survive Empire’s End, and you will see why the events in this book leave a lasting impression on those who will help usher in the era of the First Order

It’s a fast-paced story with a lot of loose ends to tie-up, but it manages to do so in a very satisfactory way. By the time I flipped the last page there was a sense of finality to it. While there are still stories to be told, obviously, Empire’s End feels like a true ending to this story arc. The story threads left dangling are nice teases for OTHER tales, making you interested in see what’s to come without leaving you unfulfilled.

Small pacing and character issues aside, Star Wars: Aftermath – Empire’s End is a well-written story with some stellar action scenes that has some visceral imagery involved. Wendig brings the story and characters full circle while leaving the door open for some intriguing possibilities in the Sequel Trilogy and other stories.

A younger reader might find joy in the book’s classic science fiction mysteries and its take-no-prisoners women. As a reviewer steeped in Star Wars, the ending treaded familiar ground. New mysteries are suggested and some questions are answered. The series is positioned to set up plot points for The Force Awakens, but it’s clear from some sections that those plot points either haven’t been established by the Lucasfilm Story Group yet or will be revealed in another medium. Empire’s End doesn’t answer all of the questions it poses, but it does resolve the character arcs for the people who have been most important within the novels themselves.

If you haven’t been able to get into the trilogy before, chances are Empire’s End won’t change your mind. But overall, I found it to be a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Just don’t expect to get every answer you’ve been hoping for.

Empires End is an enjoyable romp in the Galaxy Far Far Away; there is enticing political drama daring escapes and of course a star ship battle above Jakku that had me staying up way too late as I had to read it. However, it is overly long with some unnecessary moments that didn’t seem to add to the story or, more importantly, the characterisation. You could argue that there is an action scene too far at times and this…this is frustrating. Life Debt, the second in the series, was brilliantly paced and Wendig seems to have taken it up one notch too far.

Aftermath was overwhelming. Life Debt made me feel like hope was in short supply. Empire’s End is a story of uncertainty, of a galaxy worn down, wanting to look forward. There’s definitely a place for stories like that in the galactic realm of Star Wars. At this time, it’s not quite what I’m looking for from a galaxy far, far away. In the end, it’s up for you to decide if it’s what you want to read right now.

In the end my feelings on Empire’s End are complicated. It is a book that has passages of brilliance and passages of mediocrity, sometimes within the same chapter. [...] Wendig is undeniably an incredibly talented writer, their is a wildness to his writing that can be invigorating, but needs to be properly channeled. In Life Debt this felt better focused than in Empire’s End, a book that while important and enjoyable was at the same time a rather frustrating read.

The narrative is compelling because while the plot is happening, people are living. It has three dimensional characters with varied motivations trying to make their own path through a chaotic galaxy swirling around them. The trilogy tells the events of the fall of the Empire, yes, but the story is Sinjir Rath Velus. The story is Norra Wexley. The story is Rae Sloane. The story is the characters and the characters are some of the best Star Wars has to offer.

Wendig’s third person present tense prose has been a dividing factor across the trilogy, but as the trilogy climaxed with immense battles it really shone. The un-wielding chaos of the battle, the desperation of the characters all bled through the pages. It was page-turning drama at its finest, and as the trilogy ends I can only salute the passion, strength of character, and drama delivered by Mr Wendig.

Ultimately, "Empire's End" provides fans with a vital part of the puzzle that links the Original Trilogy and "The Force Awakens" as it finally tells us how a brutal regime came crashing down.
